Known for shaping intelligent, sustainable, and globally competitive destinations, Jonathan Gómez Punzón is widely regarded as a leading international voice in destination leadership and tourism strategy. His work combines generative AI in tourism, data-driven governance, and long-term place positioning to help cities and nations evolve into resilient, high-performing visitor economies. His leadership in Málaga serves as a living laboratory for the future of intelligent destinations, informing his contributions to global agendas through Destinations International and international institutional collaboration focused on governance, innovation, and resilience.

As CEO and Head of Málaga Tourism Board, he leads the international positioning and long-term transformation of Málaga as a global city, integrating destination strategy with urban governance, economic development, and cultural diplomacy. Under his leadership, Málaga has strengthened its global visibility and emerged as a reference model for intelligent destination management — balancing innovation, cultural identity, and sustainable growth.

Jonathan serves as Co-Chair of the Global Leadership Committee at Destinations International (2026–2027), collaborating with senior global executives to shape evolving models of destination leadership worldwide.

With more than 25 years of executive experience, he has led Spain’s most emblematic tourism boards across world’s most emblematic destinations as Granada, Ibiza, etc developing international positioning strategies, and sustainable growth models.

At the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Jonathan held a Liaison Officer role, acting as a strategic bridge between governments, ministers, academia, and multinational corporations. He coordinated the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 and supported the launch of the Global Sustainable Tourism Platform.

In the private sector, among others, he served as Director of Tourism for the landmark Four Seasons Hotel Madrid Canalejas, leading tourism strategy from development through opening and contributing to its positioning among Europe’s leading ultra-luxury hospitality assets.

A trusted strategic advisor, Jonathan has collaborated with leading consultancies including Boston Consulting Group, Oliver Wyman, and Bain & Company, supporting destination and national tourism strategies across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas.

He holds a Ph.D. in Tourism Management, an M.A. in International Relations from the London School of Economics (LSE), and multiple MSC’s in hospitality management, tourism consulting, meetings industry management, or marketing & branding. He is a regular international lecturer and keynote speaker on destination leadership, innovation, and the future of intelligent tourism.
